The Debt

The most dangerous climate signal is the one that feels like safety.

Europe is having a good run. Warmer winters. Longer growing seasons.

A Mediterranean summer that arrives earlier and stays later. If you live in the north of the continent and you judge the climate by how it feels, the last few decades have been, on balance, pleasant. If you are in the southern parts, you likely wish you had a/c at times. The fast signal — warming — is the one you can feel, and for now it often reads as improvement.

That is exactly the problem.

Because underneath the warmth, a bill is running up. And the thing about this particular bill is that the warmth is what hides it.

The conveyor

The mechanism is an ocean current with an ugly acronym: the AMOC, the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. Think of it as a conveyor belt of heat. Warm surface water rides north, gives up its warmth to the air over Europe, cools, grows dense and salty, and sinks near Greenland — and the sinking is the engine that keeps the whole belt turning. It is the reason a continent at the latitude of Labrador grows wine instead of tundra.

The engine is losing power.

As the planet warms, Greenland melts, and the meltwater is fresh. Fresh water is lighter. It resists sinking. The more it pools at the top of the belt, the weaker the pull that drives the entire circulation. The AMOC is now measured to be at its weakest in more than a thousand years.1

Colder, not warmer

Here is the part that breaks the intuition.

If the belt collapses, Europe does not warm faster. It cools. Hard. The continent that has been enjoying the warming would be plunged the other way — and the global warming happening everywhere else would not be enough to save it.

Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC)

That last clause is not rhetoric. It's the specific finding of recent modeling work from Utrecht — van Westen and Baatsen, 2025 — which did the honest experiment: run the AMOC collapse together with greenhouse warming, and see which wins.2 In an intermediate-emissions world, the answer is that the warming loses. The cooling from a stalled conveyor overwhelms it.3 Earlier work in the same group put the winter temperature drop across northern Europe at ten to thirty degrees Celsius within a century.3 Norway's normally mild west coast — kept green today by exactly this current — could see extremes below minus forty.4

And it isn't only cold. It's cold and dry.

The modeling shows a stalled AMOC pulling precipitation down across Europe, deepening droughts, strengthening the westerly winds, driving harder winter storms.5 Not a gentle slide into a cooler climate. A regime change — a different continent, arriving fast, on the far side of a threshold.

The real subject

But the tipping point is not actually the subject of this piece. The subject is the debt.

Because whether or not the belt ever fully collapses, the mechanism is already teaching us the shape of the most dangerous dynamic in the whole system. A fast, pleasant signal — warmth — sitting on top of a slow, accumulating cost that hasn't arrived yet. The good decades are not evidence that the account is healthy. They are the period during which the debt is quietly run up, unfelt, precisely because the surface feels fine.

And this pattern is not unique to one ocean current. It's built into the physics of the whole planet.

Recall the two clocks. The warming you feel today is the transient response — what shows up while carbon is still climbing. The equilibrium response — the full warming already locked in by the carbon we've emitted — is larger and slower, held back by the enormous thermal inertia of the deep ocean. By the standard estimates, the thermometer right now is displaying maybe a third to a half of the warming we have already committed to.7 The rest is in the pipeline. It is owed. It has not yet been presented.

Part of the bill has been hidden by a second hand, too. Industrial aerosols — the haze of a fossil-fuel economy — reflect sunlight and cool the surface while they hang in the air. They have been masking a slice of the warming for decades.8 Clean up the air, as we are now doing, and that masked warming steps out from behind the haze. The cleaner sky is better for your lungs and worse for the account. Even the mitigation unmasks the debt.

A benefit that feels like arrival

This is what masking looks like as a climate dynamic. Not a threat you can see coming and brace for. A benefit that feels like arrival while the cost accrues out of sight — in a current losing power a thousand years into its decline, in an ocean absorbing heat it will hand back later, behind a haze we are clearing for good reasons.

The trap of it is psychological as much as physical. A slope you can watch. A number climbing toward a bad year, you can plan against. But a debt masked by a benefit gives you no signal to act on — it gives you the opposite signal. It tells you things are fine, right up until the belt stalls, or the pipeline empties, or the haze lifts, and the bill comes due all at once.

The warmth over Europe is not the good news.

The warmth is the interest-free period before the statement arrives.
